Korean edu-tech innovator Tella showcases inclusive English learning platform at region’s largest youth social entrepreneurship gathering co-led by UNDP and Citi Foundation

28 June 2024, ManilaTella, an edu-tech startup based in Seoul that aims to create job opportunities for youth in developing countries, represented the Republic of Korea at the Regional Youth Co:Lab Summit 2024. Centered on the theme of ‘Inclusive Entrepreneurship’, over 200 participants from 20 countries and territories gathered in the Philippines at Youth Co:Lab Summit 2024, by Citi Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme, organized together with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the Department of Trade and Industry Philippines (DTI),  to celebrate and highlight the critical role of young entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds in driving sustainable and equitable economic development and in advancing the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

 

Yuha Jin, CEO and Co-founder of Tella, shared her inspiring personal journey as a woman entrepreneur, emphasizing her commitment to fostering inclusivity at a session on ‘Youth Co:Lab Talks: Impact to Journey’. She was also a panelist of the session on Future Proofing Entrepreneurship and presented her enterprise at the Demo Day.  Tella connects English learners all over the world with native English tutors in Southeast Asia and Africa through 1:1 chat-based English lessons. With over 100,000 users across 60 countries. In recognition of its social and environmental commitments, Tella also achieved the B corp certification in 2019.

“Tella is not only bridging language gaps but also creating more than 300 knowledge-based job opportunities for university-educated youth in developing countries like the Philippines and Uganda.” said Yuha Jin, CEO and Co-Founder of Tella. “Young entrepreneurs should be very well aware of technological advances and diversify their business portfolio to manage future risks,” she added.

The Summit provided a regional space for young social entrepreneurs across the Asia-Pacific region to foster knowledge and idea exchanges through networking and collaboration, inspire and engage youth to take action, discuss emerging trends in the youth entrepreneurship ecosystem, advocate for policies to enhance its resilience and inaugurate collaborative initiatives for inclusive youth entrepreneurship.

The two-day summit (27-28 June) saw participants from diverse backgrounds, including young social entrepreneurs, government delegates, private sector partners, investors, and other youth community partners joining virtually. The Korea SMEs & Startups Institution (KOSI) also attended the Summit’s government track on ‘Innovating Policy for Sustainable and Inclusive Youth Entrepreneurship’ to share Korea’s startup-promotion policies and best practices for creating an ecosystem that promotes green entrepreneurship as well as ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for youth from diverse backgrounds.

Youth Co:Lab Summit 2024 was also held in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), CVC Capital Partners, the Commonwealth Secretariat (CWS), EY, The Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the Spark Project, and the StartupUp Quezon City and the Local Economic Investment Promotions Office of the Local Government of Quezon City.

Youth Co:Lab, co-created by UNDP and the Citi Foundation in 2017, is the largest youth movement for empowerment, social entrepreneurship, equality, and social inclusion in Asia Pacific and has supported young people in 28 countries and territories. Since its inception, activities supported by Youth Co:Lab have reached 280,300 participants across the Asia-Pacific region.
