UNDP builds awareness and capacities for addressing online and offline hate speech, as well as information pollution by following the commitments and guidance set forth in the UN Guidance for the imeplementation of the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech (2019).
As such, addressing dangerous, or hateful, speech to disparage individuals and to promote violence against them, based on ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other defined difference is a priority for UNDP. As hate speech has evolved with the growth of social media, UNDP’s PVE portfolio has expanded to address hate speech online and offline.

UNDP utilised Google Ad campaigns for digital literacy through the “Fighting Hate and False Narratives Initiative”, and to raise awareness of hate speech through content and websites that encouraged positive civic engagement, raised awareness, and educated users on misinformation, cybercrime, and information pollution.

In UNDP Asia Pacific alone, campaigns that promoted alternative narratives and encouraged inclusion and diversity reached a large audience and trained youths to challenge hateful messages.
