Disclosed for public review - Environmental and Social Impact Assessment

09, August 2024 - Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Final Draft Report Disclosed for Public Review The Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB) Management project has been implementing in partnership with Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) Ethiopia Electric Power (EEP), Ethiopia Electric Utility (EEU), and Ethio- Engineering Group (EEG). The Project is designed to support Ethiopia with the necessary technical and financial assistance to reduce the risks proposed by PCBs to the environment and human health and to meet the 2025 Stockholm Convention deadline. The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) has been conducted to identify, analyse and mitigate adverse impact impacts of the project during PCBs material collection, transportation, treatment and disposal. The assessment has focused on Ethiopian Electric Utility (EEU) in Adama District, Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) at Awash Melkas Power generation plant and Ethio-engineering groups (EEG) Tatek Transformer Factory at Sheger City Administration PCB temporary storage facilities. The assessment identified both positive and negative environmental and social impacts and proposed mitigation measures. The project has significant positive impacts through decreasing the health impacts of PCBs to the community, enable Ethiopia to comply its obligations under the Stockholm Convention, decrease the environmental and health impacts of PCBs and create employment opportunity and income generation. Despite its benefits at local, national and regional levels, the project could also result in several negative impacts during the construction, operation and decommissioning phase of the project activities, therefore, for those identified adverse impacts the required mitigation measures have proposed to be implemented by the service provider/contractor and implementing partners. The draft Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) report is accessible below for public review and comments. The review period will end on 09 September 2024.
