Investment Case for Tobacco Control in Serbia

Investment Case for Tobacco Control in Serbia

May 20, 2024

Tobacco is a health and sustainability concern causing death, disease, environmental damage, economic loss, and widening social disparities. This report highlights the Serbian Government's focus on tobacco control, recommending seven measures in line with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) Global Strategy to Accelerate Tobacco Control. These measures aim to increase tobacco tax, enforce smoke-free public areas, enhance tobacco packaging warnings, implement plain packaging, ban tobacco ads and promotions, raise public tobacco control awareness, and promote quitting strategies. By presenting the significant financial and health costs of tobacco use in Serbia, the report advocates for policy actions that can bring notable economic and health benefits. The implementation of robust tobacco control policies will crucially contribute to Serbia's sustainable development.

This report was completed through collaborative efforts of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia, the Institute of Public Health of Serbia, the Institute of Economic Sciences, the United Nations Development Programme, the Secretariat of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, and the World Health Organization (WHO).
