Bosaso City Strategy 2024

October 17, 2024

Turning strategic recommendations into practical, actionable programs and policies necessitates a series of specific steps aimed at sparking the desired spatial, economic, and social changes. To achieve this objective, the eastern section of Bosaso was selected for the development of a City Extension Plan. This choice was based on multiple factors. Primarily, it has the largest number of registered IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) sites, with 15 out of 22 sites. Most of this sites are concentrated in the area of “old Gribble”, that faces several challenges related to overcrowding, substandard service provision, and the highest risk of eviction according to CCCM’s assessments.

Moreover, the ongoing development of the Gribble resettlement settlement has garnered significant attention from both governmental and international agencies. The area also has show a strong presence of land subdivisions, indicating high interest from private landowners and investors. This interest has yet to be concretised into proper urban development proposal, contrary to what is currently happening for the western periphery of Bosaso.

Saameynta is a partnership of IOM, UNDP, UN-Habitat, supported and coordinated by the Integrated Office of the UN DSRSG/RC/ HC and endorsed by the Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development of the Federal Republic of Somalia. The DSRSG has been committed to Saamenyta as the first flagship project of the UN Somalia Cooperation Framework (2021-2025) managed through the Somalia Joint Fund (SJF). The three UN agencies have come together across institutional boundaries to tackle mass displacement in urban areas in line with UN reform, the One UN approach and the New Way of Working.
