The Role of Women in the Somali Private Sector

August 27, 2014

This publication delves into the challenges faced by women in Somalia's private sector, where Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the main players, and women drive the micro sector. Women face numerous challenges, including expensive electricity, limited access to credit and business development services, insecurity, and complex taxation policies, which trap them in the sector. Despite these challenges, educated female entrepreneurs and diaspora are making strides in traditionally male-dominated sectors, such as livestock, fishery, and petroleum importing. However, women still struggle to access vital business information, and their success often depends on belonging to a strategic network and having strong clan connections.
