Ana was only 17 years old when she faced trials beyond her years. With a heavy heart, she entered the Centro Esperança Ba Feto (CEF) shelter, not only traumatized by sexual violence, but also feeling isolated and rejected by her own family, with some relatives even implying that her troubles were a punishment. She was left feeling deeply sad, alienated, and burdened with self-blame.

Understanding her vulnerability, the CEF team worked tirelessly to provide the support and care she needed. The program, supported by the Together for Equality (T4E) project and a network of committed staff members, offered Ana a variety of activities such as vocational skills training, therapeutic and religious meetings, and regular counseling. These activities helped her express her emotions, recognize her strengths, and gradually find a sense of purpose, despite her situation. As she learned new skills, Ana began to experience moments of joy, reclaiming a sense of hope she thought was lost.

The T4E training to CEF on trauma-informed approach and effective communication fostered a compassionate environment that allowed Ana to grow. With every activity, whether leading prayers, participating in group discussions, or simply sharing time with her peers, she felt her confidence building. No longer held back by fear or shame, she came to realize she was surrounded by people who cared deeply for her well-being and safety. Through these positive interactions, she started to envision a future filled with purpose and possibilities.

Ana’s journey is a powerful testament to the impact of the T4E project, funded by KOICA and implemented by UNDP in partnership with civil society organizations like CEF. The project addresses gender-based violence through extensive support networks, outreach programs, and skill-building activities, providing survivors with the tools they need to heal, grow, and thrive. This transformative approach highlights the project's broader mission: empowering survivors to claim their rights to live free from violence and enhancing services that stand united against gender-based violence (GBV).

GBV survivors are the true heroes of their own lives fighting until sorrow fades and only hope remains, guiding them into a new chapter in which life is treasured and protected. Telling their stories is telling a tale of hope, which many partners contribute to by working tirelessly for a successful and happier ending.
