Supporting the preparation of the second Voluntary National Review (VNR) of Turkmenistan
March 30, 2023
The workshop on the preparation of a draft of the second Voluntary National Review (VNR) of Turkmenistan for Sustainable Development Goals implementation was held on 29 March 2023 with the support of the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan and the UN Development Programme project “Partnering for SDG acceleration. Phase II".
The second Voluntary National Review of Turkmenistan will present the progress of the country's development achievements against goals that cover such key areas as health, education, food and energy security, infrastructure, gender equality, environment, and partnership.
One of the key messages of the VNR is the country's commitment to achieving the SDGs and creating a holistic model of human-centered sustainable development and improving the well-being of every citizen of the country. The Review presents a unique national experience in countering the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to which the country was able to move to a new level of sustainable development: it presents progress in improving the institutional framework to ensure the effective implementation of the SDGs, assesses the integration of the SDGs into the public planning system, as well as the progress in promoting development finance issues for further implementation of Integrated National Financing Frameworks.
Bakytgul Hambar, an international expert assisting in the preparation of the VNR, took part in the workshop. She shared her conclusions on the results of the preparation of the Voluntary National Review and noted that the national review of Turkmenistan is a new stage in the implementation of the SDGs, which takes into account modern challenges and realities. At the same time, the expert indicated the importance of developing next steps for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The workshop was attended by representatives of the national ministries and entities, as well as the UN Agencies. Participants discussed key findings and next steps in preparing the final version of the Second VNR for presentation at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July 2023.
“One of the key messages of the VNR is the country's commitment to achieving the SDGs and creating a holistic model of sustainable development with a focus on people,” – said Mr. Tomica Paovic, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Turkmenistan. “As we have only seven years left to achieve the SDGs, UNDP will continue strengthening the national capacity and supporting Turkmenistan in taking measures to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change, promote "green" economic sectors, strengthen the country’s health and social protection system and improve governance principles focusing on human rights and gender equality”.
