UNDP expands livelihoods of local communities for alternative income sources

Within the framework of the project “Conservation and Sustainable Management of Land Resources and High Nature Value Ecosystems in the Aral Sea Basin for Multiple Benefits”, jointly implemented by UNDP and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, a workshop was held on June 9, 2023 in the city of Seydi of Danev etrap. The main topic of the workshop was on alternative sources of income through the use of land and water saving methods and technologies, as well as land use planning in the context of climate change and biodiversity conservation in the pilot area of the Lebap velayat.

The event was attended by representatives of the private sector of the agro-industrial complex, specialists from the khiakimliks of the Dargan-ata and Dyanev etraps on agriculture and water resources management, representatives of agricultural and livestock farms, gengeshes from the project pilot regions, experts on agriculture and employees of the Amudarya State Nature Reserve.

The workshop presented sustainable practices and innovative approaches in the field of horticulture, greenhouse farming and irrigated agriculture based on the experience of previous joint UNDP/The Government of Turkmenistan projects, demonstrated zero-tillage methods, the advantages of laser leveling of land, as well as methods for the production of biofertilizers.
