Berlin, 12 June 2024 – Today, at the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC) 2024 in Berlin, Germany, a landmark initiative was launched: the Alliance for Gender-Responsive and Inclusive Recovery.

This crucial step towards a more equitable future for Ukraine is backed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, one of the first supporters of the initiative, which was proposed by UN Women Ukraine and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.

The ongoing war in Ukraine has disproportionately affected women and girls, along with other vulnerable groups. Women are experiencing higher rates of poverty, displacement, and gender-based violence. Despite their critical contributions to humanitarian efforts, defence, and early recovery, women continue to be underrepresented in decision-making processes.

The Alliance for Gender-Responsive and Inclusive Recovery aims to address these disparities, ensuring a more inclusive future for all Ukrainians. This collaborative effort includes governments, international organizations, civil society, and the business community, all working towards lasting gender equality and women's empowerment in Ukraine.

Resident Representative of UNDP in Ukraine Jaco Cilliers said joining the alliance reinforces the UNDP in Ukraine's commitment to a gender-responsive and inclusive recovery.

“The launch of this alliance marks a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s recovery journey,” Cilliers said. “Women have been at the forefront of resilience and recovery, yet their voices often go unheard in key decision-making arenas. This initiative ensures that women are not just participants but leaders in the rebuilding process.”

"By advocating for gender equality, we are laying the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive Ukraine."

The alliance invites all stakeholders dedicated to a resilient Ukraine to join forces in this initiative and help achieve meaningful gender equality. Together, we can ensure that the recovery efforts benefit every segment of society, fostering a sustainable and equitable future for all Ukrainians.
