Kyiv, Ukraine, 10 January 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has welcomed a vital contribution of $20.79 million from the Republic of Korea to support early recovery and area-based development projects in Ukraine. This funding marks a critical transition from immediate humanitarian aid to early recovery efforts in the war-affected regions of Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kherson.

The new projects will target key areas where the need for assistance is paramount. These initiatives aim to strengthen the Ukrainian government’s ability to deliver essential services while addressing the urgent needs of local populations – in particular the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees. Current projections indicate that approximately 12.6 million Ukrainians will require humanitarian assistance in 2025 due to ongoing war caused by the Russian full-scale invasion, which have resulted in devastating impacts on infrastructure.

The project specifically addresses the urgent situations in Zaporizhzhia, where civilians endure daily aerial assaults leading to widespread trauma and displacement; Sumy, which houses around 30,000 IDPs; and Kherson, where the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam has critically compromised water management systems.

All initiatives will focus on restoring essential services, including energy, water and waste management systems, and rehabilitating critical infrastructure in the affected regions. These efforts will promote inclusivity and sustainability for vulnerable populations, such as the Roma community, persons with disabilities and LGBTQI+ people. By integrating green recovery principles, these initiatives will not only rebuild what was lost but also enhance resilience against future challenges, fostering a more sustainable future for the communities impacted by the war.

Ambassador Kim Hyung Tae of the Republic of Korea to Ukraine said: “Korea stands firmly with Ukraine during this challenging time. Our partnership with UNDP exemplifies our commitment to supporting recovery efforts that not only meet immediate humanitarian needs but also foster long-term resilience and development in the affected regions.”

Jaco Cilliers, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “This significant contribution from the Republic of Korea is not merely financial assistance; it represents hope and a vital lifeline for communities striving to rebuild. By focusing on enhancing local government capacities and rehabilitating critical infrastructure, we are paving the way for a sustainable future for those affected by the war.”

In addition to this new contribution, the Republic of Korea continues to support various critical areas through UNDP in Ukraine. Notably, significant strides have been made in enhancing services for people with disabilities and strengthening energy infrastructure. A collaborative project has incorporated social workers into multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams, providing vital support to over 10,000 people, while substantial contributions have facilitated the restoration of Ukraine's energy sector through the supply of high-voltage bushings for essential utilities.

Background:
This funding is part of UNDP's broader efforts to assist in Ukraine's recovery from the devastating impacts of the ongoing conflict. The organisation collaborates with various stakeholders to restore critical infrastructure, bolster local capacities, and implement inclusive recovery strategies. Through transparency and technical expertise, UNDP remains dedicated to supporting Ukraine on its path towards resilience and stability.
