Kyiv, 13 December 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine is to receive a substantial contribution of EUR 1.5 million from the Government of Italy to bolster UNDP's Mine Action Programme in Ukraine.

This funding will significantly enhance efforts to expedite land release operations and build national capacities to address the threats posed by landmines and other explosive remnants. The Mine Action Programme, led by UNDP, is dedicated to reducing risks to civilian safety, strengthening institutional frameworks, and aiding the recovery and safe return of impacted communities.

Italy's generous donation is earmarked for essential capacity-building initiatives and strategic land release operations, aiming to survey and clear mines from affected territories. The Italian Government's support underscores its steadfast commitment to security and stability in Ukraine, reflecting the importance of international cooperation in this crucial area.

Italian Ambassador to Ukraine Carlo Formosa stated, "This contribution is a tangible sign of Italy's commitment to security and stability in Ukraine. We trust that our support will assist in expediting decontamination efforts and fortifying the capabilities of Ukrainian institutions to meet these challenges in alignment with our shared objectives."

Yulia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, expressed her gratitude, noting, "Italy's support is instrumental in our ongoing efforts to ensure Ukraine's safety and resilience. The country’s collaboration exemplifies the solidarity needed to surmount these humanitarian challenges."

Pietro Pipi, Head of the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Kyiv, remarked, "This initiative is part of the Italian Cooperation’s broader commitment to mine action in Ukraine, with significant investments planned over the next three years. Supporting mine clearance and enhancing local capacities are essential steps to ensure safety and enable communities to focus on rebuilding their future."

Jaco Cilliers, UNDP Resident Representative in Ukraine, added, "Italy’s crucial support highlights the international community's dedication to Ukraine’s recovery. This funding will enable us to enhance safety measures and empower local communities, paving the way towards a secure and prosperous Ukraine."

Italy's involvement complements the collective efforts of Ukraine’s other partner nations, each playing a vital role in advancing this essential humanitarian mission.
