Mykolaiv Recovered

Project summary:

To support green recovery of Mykolaiv City and Oblast through new employment opportunities, restored and enhanced public and security services and inclusive and transparent local governance, UNDP – with generous support from the Government of Denmark – has launched the “Mykolaiv Recovered” project.

The project is designed to integrate local government-led recovery planning and public service provision with active citizen engagement and support for local economic recovery. It focuses on four key areas:

  • The establishment of inclusive and participatory mechanisms for planning, implementing, and monitoring recovery efforts: this will ensure that all voices are heard and involved in the recovery process, fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility.
  • Re-establishing and enhancing public services, especially in areas heavily affected by the war, including those that were temporarily not under the control of the Government of Ukraine. By restoring these essential services, the project will help communities regain stability and normality.
  • Community resilience and recovery through citizen-led actions, with a special focus on encouraging the participation of young women and men in local recovery. This approach not only strengthens community bonds; it also empowers individuals to take an active role in rebuilding their lives and visioning the future of their country.
  • Promoting local economic recovery by providing vocational education and training. Women and men in project partner communities are being supported to develop the capacities and skills they need to thrive in the labour market, and contribute to the creation of fertile ground for private entrepreneurship and economic growth.

Key initiatives include forming Community Working Groups to lead recovery planning, expanding and upgrading Administrative Service Centres, and supporting health care facilities to adapt to new needs and challenges. The project also focuses on empowering youth and veterans, encouraging community mobilization, and aligning vocational training with labour market needs.

Project goal:

The overall goal of the project is to provide comprehensive support for the green recovery of Mykolaiv City and Oblast by creating new employment opportunities, restoring and enhancing public and security services, and promoting inclusive and transparent local governance.

Expected results:

To this end, the project is intended to achieve the following four interconnected outputs:

  • Mykolaiv communities, including women, men, youth, older people, veterans and other vulnerable groups are enabled to actively participate in the local recovery and development.
  • Mykolaiv communities, including women, men, youth, elderly, veterans and other vulnerable groups have improved access to quality administrative, social, and healthcare services in an equitable and timely manner.
  • Mykolaiv government and civil society institutions collaboratively advance inclusive recovery, reinforce human rights observance, and empower communities, with a specific emphasis on youth.
  • Vocational training and employment institutions equip women, men and youth with skills and knowledge to confidently join labour market and contribute to local economy.
