Repair of Schools in War-affected Areas

Project summary:

UNDP in Ukraine, with financial support from the Government of Germany, launched the “Repair of Schools in War-Affected Areas” project as a response to the needs of the communities most vulnerable, and affected by the ongoing war. The project’s objectives are to repair and renovate 12 educational facilities in six target oblasts of Ukraine. One of these was prioritized to be rebuilt according to international standards and principles of accessibility, energy efficiency, gender mainstreaming, health, safety and the environment (HSE).

Goal:

The project is intended to facilitate the resumption of in-person learning in 12 schools by completing the repairs needed to ensure a safe learning environment.

Expected results:

Result 1: Partial rehabilitation of the buildings of 11 schools identified as urgent needs by the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, focusing on light and medium repairs, so that more than 3,000 students can return to their schools

Result 2: One pilot location fully repaired and re-equipped according to international standards and principles of accessibility, energy efficiency, gender mainstreaming, and HSE.

Result 3: Development of the New School Concept to improve the educational infrastructure standards in Ukraine and to guideline ongoing and further recovery.

Implementation period: December 2022 – December 2024

Budget: EUR 5 million 

Implementation area: Lviv, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy, Poltava, Kirovohrad, and Kyiv oblasts
