Unlocking the Potential of the Aral Sea Region through Japanese Methods ‘‘One Village — One Product’’ and ‘‘Kaizen’’
February 28, 2025
This material presents a comprehensive review of the implementation of Japanese methodologies "One Village - One Product" (OVOP) and "Kaizen" in the Aral Sea region since 2020. The initiative, implemented with UNDP support and funding from the Government of Japan, aims to stimulate economic development and increase the resilience of local communities through the creation of unique local products. The document highlights the process of training local entrepreneurs, the establishment of an institutional framework, international cooperation, and specific achievements of the program. Special attention is paid to the success stories of project participants who were able to create competitive products using local resources.
The implementation of OVOP and Kaizen methodologies in the Aral Sea region represents a multi-level strategic move aimed at addressing a whole complex of economic and social problems. The choice of this particular region is not accidental – the territory, which has suffered from an ecological catastrophe for many years, is receiving new tools for sustainable development. This approach has significant potential for spreading throughout the country, with Karakalpakstan serving as a pilot region demonstrating the effectiveness of Japanese methodologies in Uzbekistan's conditions and opening prospects for their implementation in other areas of the republic.
