Ha Noi, 17 July 2024 – The Transport Development and Strategy Institute (TDSI) of the Ministry of Transport, together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), today announced the results of a comprehensive study, "Green Jobs Assessment of the Transport Sector - Focus on Road Sub-sector." This report aligns with Vietnam's Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2022. It highlights the potential for green job creation through sustainable practices in the road transport sector.

The study proposes innovative methodologies for assessing green jobs and analyzes the employment transitions under various green transport scenarios. Focusing on the road subsector, the findings underscore the significant economic and environmental benefits of transitioning to green jobs.

"Viet Nam has actively pursued reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, with a commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050," stated Mr. Patrick Haverman, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative. "Our analysis indicates that green transport policies will benefit the environment and enhance job creation and economic growth."

Key results from the study suggest that new green policies could result in approximately 99,000 new jobs by 2030, with a substantial increase in sectors related to producing electric vehicles and renewable energy solutions. "The transition to low-carbon transport modes and electrification of road transport is projected to boost overall employment significantly," added Mr. Haverman.

The report recommends that Viet Nam invests in targeted skill development and educational programs to prepare the workforce for upcoming changes. This strategic approach aims to support workers in adapting to new job requirements in the evolving green economy, ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining social equity.

It also emphasizes the importance of collaborative efforts between the government, private sector, and educational institutions to effectively implement the study's recommendations. These partnerships are crucial for developing a resilient infrastructure that supports sustainable growth and employment in Viet Nam.

"Human resources in the transportation industry also need to update management skills and expertise to meet the requirements of the new situation. With such significance, the results of the research discussed at today's workshop will contribute to the development of a human resource development strategy to meet the development requirements of the transportation industry until 2030 and with a vision to the year 2045," said Mr. Nguyen Huu Tien, Deputy Director of the Department of Science, Technology, and Environment, Ministry of Transportation.

The full report is available for policymakers, industry experts, and the public to download. It offers a detailed roadmap for integrating green jobs into Vietnam's economic planning and development strategies.
