Ta Dung National Park, Dak Nong province, Viet Nam
Dak Nong, 25 February 2025 - Ta Dung National Park, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme in Vietnam (UNDP Vietnam), organized a technical consultation workshop for the draft ecotourism plan of Ta Dung National Park. This workshop is part of the "Comprehensive sustainable landscape management through the approach of sustainable development without causing deforestation in Lam Dong and Dak Nong, Viet Nam" project (or iLandscape) in Lam Dong and Dak Nong provinces, funded by the European Union (EU) in Viet Nam and implemented by UNDP.
The workshop was to consult with stakeholders on the project of high-quality and sustainable ecotourism based on the unique natural and cultural resources of Ta Dung National Park. Stakeholders, including government agencies, provincial and district management, scientific and international organizations, and local communities, are invited to contribute their opinions for responsible ecotourism development and effective and sustainable tourism development strategies that balance the exploitation and conservation of natural and social resources.
Ta Dung National Park is located in Dak Nong province, part of the Central Highlands region of Viet Nam, and was established in 2018 under Decision No. 185/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister. The park was formerly part of Ta Dung Nature Reserve and currently manages an area of approximately 19,875.74 ha. Of these, special-use forests account for 19,724.16 ha, production forest is 111.82 ha, and the three types of forests outside the planning area are 39.76 ha.
With terrain mainly of lowland tropical evergreen closed forests, Ta Dung is one of the areas with rich biodiversity and many rare species of flora and fauna. It is a crucial biodiversity conservation area and an ideal destination for ecotourism activities such as trekking, wildlife observation, and exploring spectacular waterfalls such as Sun Waterfall, Granite Waterfall, and Seven-Tier Waterfall.
At the workshop, the Director of Ta Dung National Park, Mr. Khuong Thanh Long, emphasized the role and importance of the National Park in biodiversity conservation and sustainable ecotourism development. He said: "Ta Dung National Park is not only a treasure of nature but also a cultural intersection of more than 40 ethnic groups in Dak Nong. The development of ecotourism not only contributes to nature conservation but also promotes local economic development."
This draft tourism plan proposes that the main activities will include the development of trekking routes, resting places at waterfalls, environmental education centers, and indigenous cultural experiences.
"We want to support Ta Dung National Park in developing a high-quality ecotourism plan based on the locality's unique natural and cultural resources," said Mr. Do Trong Hoan, iLandscape Project Manager of UNDP. "The plan of Ta Dung National Park will help improve people's lives and contribute to the sustainable development goals of Dak Nong province. We are honored to accompany and support Dak Nong province and Ta Dung National Park in achieving these goals."
The ecotourism plan of Ta Dung National Park, when approved, will be an essential legal basis for Ta Dung National Park to implement sustainable tourism activities, models of payment for forest environmental services for ecotourism services, contributing to enhancing the value of forest services and reducing pressure on unsustainable exploitation of forest resources - this is an important goal of the iLandscape project.
