Lusaka, Zambia, August 21, 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched the Strengthening Economic Diplomacy, Foreign Policy, and Institutional Capacity for Zambia’s Economic Transformation Project, a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and UNDP. This landmark project aims to reinforce Zambia’s diplomatic and economic engagement with the global community, fostering transformative development across the nation.

The project was officially signed at Mulungushi Conference Centre with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary - International Relations and Cooperation, Ms. Etambuyu Gundersen and UNDP’s Resident Representative, Mr. James Wakiaga in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Milambo Haimbe and United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator, Ms. Beatrice Mutali together with various development partners. This collaborative initiative reflects the UN’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s aspirations for sustainable development, peace, and security.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ms Mutali emphasized the significance of the project in addressing the complex challenges faced by Zambia and the world at large. "This project embodies the values of the United Nations, aligning with the vision articulated by UN Secretary-General, António Guterres. It highlights the critical link between development and conflict prevention, and the need for collaborative efforts to achieve peace, security, and prosperity," Ms Mutali stated.

The project adopts a two-pillar approach, focusing on both political and economic diplomacy. It recognizes that lasting peace and security cannot be achieved without meaningful development. As Zambia and other nations grapple with issues such as globalization, climate change, and geopolitical tensions, this initiative is a timely and essential response to these global challenges.

Ms Mutali also noted the importance of the upcoming Summit of the Future, scheduled for September 2024, which will focus on "Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow." The project in Zambia is seen as a crucial local intervention that complements the global discussions, contributing to Zambia’s engagement with the international community, particularly within the SADC region and across Africa.

She thanked the Government of Zambia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the development partners who have demonstrated unwavering support for this project. Their commitment is a clear testament to the interconnectedness of our world and the shared responsibility to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Ms Mutali reaffirmed the UN’s dedication to working with the Government of Zambia and all partners to harness the collective talent and resources within the UN System, ensuring that it remains responsive to the current challenges and continue to support Zambia’s journey towards sustainable and inclusive development.
