In the Current: Insights from Small Scale Initiatives on Flood Mitigation

September 28, 2024

The UNDP Accelerator Labs Indonesia Flood Mitigation Report 2023, developed by the UNDP Accelerator Lab Indonesia in collaboration with various stakeholders, highlights the innovative approaches and grassroots solutions being implemented to mitigate floods in Indonesia. Through ethnographic research in seven urban areas and digital lake mapping in and around the Jakarta metropolitan area, the report illustrates the complex interplay between local communities, water ecology, and flooding. It emphasizes the importance of integrating local innovations, such as bamboo breakwaters and flood calendars, with formal policy frameworks to strengthen resilience. Furthermore, the findings call for a synergistic approach, combining top-down policy interventions with bottom-up insights from grassroots communities, to ensure sustainable flood management.

The report also emphasizes the critical role of partnerships in addressing the strategic issues of urban flooding. By working with stakeholders such as government agencies, think tanks, and grassroots innovators, the Accelerator Lab has mapped over 200 lakes, identifying both their current conditions and potential for flood mitigation. This initiative underscores the need for continuous collaboration and innovation at both the community and policy levels to address Indonesia’s growing urban flood challenges, particularly as climate change exacerbates these risks.
