Disaster risk reduction in West Africa and the Sahelian Region: a review of progress

October 24, 2022

African nations signed up for the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction(link is external), a 15-year plan to enhance disaster resilience. To achieve the ambitions, the African Union created a Programme of Action (link is external)detailing what needed to happen at the continental, regional and national scales. Seven years on, the question is being asked; has sufficient progress been made towards the Programme of Action? A major review across seven countries by the African Union Commission(link is external), UNDP through the Sahel Resilience Project and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI)(link is external) finds widespread progress has been made. Despite such improvements, challenges remain. This important study, which was presented in Dakar in October 2022, provides over 200 recommendations on the way forward.
