City Park in Lukavac
From an overgrown meadow to a gathering place for all generations worth visiting
January 8, 2025
With the renovation of the park next to the city pedestrian zone, the residents of Lukavac now have a space where they can spend quality time, walk along new pedestrian paths, relax on benches in the shade, or enjoy the evenings under new lighting while children play football on the field. Soon, a music pavilion is expected to be completed, while three exhibition and sales houses have already provided employment for some.
In one of the small houses, Lejla Moranjkić offers park visitors fresh food products and juices throughout the year. She says she is satisfied with the progress of her business so far:
“We’ve been here since the end of summer, whereas in previous years we mostly worked seasonally during the month-long ‘Winter in Lukavac’ event. When the park was renovated and the small houses installed, we applied to use them. After receiving approval, we started our business. We come here in the evenings, and the park is frequented even though it’s still new to people. We hope that in the near future, visits and sales will improve even more. When visitors come, I see their smiles, the children are excited, and everyone is glad that something is happening in the town and that they have a place to go out and walk”.Lejla Moranjkić
The Music Pavilion Will Complete the Space
The park was renovated as part of the Project for Improving Performance of Local Services in Bosnia and Herzegovina (PIPLS), financed by Sweden and implemented and co-financed by the United Nations Development Programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina (UNDP BiH), with the support of three cantons and 22 local self-government units.
Mirsad Mujić, President of the Council of the Lukavac Local Community, expressed his satisfaction with the work done:
“The renovation of this park has given the entire complex a fantastic role. We now have a promenade filled with walkers during the summer months, as well as a park area where children play football, watched over by elders, while mothers stroll with their babies. Behind the park is a kindergarten, and next to it, there’s a small play area previously donated by a private company. Altogether, it creates a wonderful whole that will be completed with the construction of the music pavilion. Young musicians will be able to perform there, promote their music and themselves, while citizens will enjoy their performances".Mirsad Mujić
Amra Kišić, a member of the Council of the Lukavac Local Community, lives nearby and frequently uses the park, especially during her maternity leave:
“The park has given a new look to the town, a new dimension and purpose, and it has truly contributed to the town in many ways, especially for younger generations and children, but also for the elderly. It has become a place worth visiting when you come to Lukavac. There are many trees, and therefore plenty of shade, which is very needed in an industrial town like Lukavac. Currently, I’m on maternity leave, and I personally use this park. I come here with my baby for walks, while my older son, who is nine and a half, loves to play football with his friends on the playground".Amra Kišić
The Park Now Has Multiple Purposes
Sena Tahirović, a Development and Planning Advisor in the Investment and Development Department of the City of Lukavac, said the project has fully achieved its goals. The park has transformed from an overgrown meadow into a gathering place for all generations, as well as for visitors to the city, particularly because it is located near the bus station and is often the first thing people see when they arrive.
“The park now serves multiple purposes and has completely transformed this part of the city for the better. Children, retirees, and young people who come here benefit the most. We couldn’t complete the music pavilion in the first phase, but funding was later secured, and we are in the process of starting construction. The benches were custom-made, and we built a playground with goals so children can play football. Together with the playground previously donated by a private company from Lukavac, it forms a useful whole. Instead of an overgrown meadow, we now have a modern park with all necessary amenities. There’s also a kindergarten that now has a nicer surrounding area, and sometimes the kindergarten children come out to play and interact with children from the neighborhood and city. Three small houses have been installed, which we recently used for a women’s entrepreneurship fair where women displayed their products".Sena Tahirović
The Project for Improving Performance of Local Services in Bosnia and Herzegovina (PIPLS) aims to improve access to essential public services through better management and increased investment in local infrastructure.
