Energy-retrofitted Elementary School "Musa Ćazim Ćatić" in Visoko through the LowCarbon project
School in a new, better look: Transformation towards higher quality education
December 25, 2023
After enduring years in cold and dilapidated school premises, 390 pupils and 52 employees of the Elementary School "Musa Ćazim Ćatić" in Visoko now enjoy warm and comfortable rooms that enhanced the quality of classes.
The improved conditions of education in this school were achieved with the support of the Ministry of Spatial Planning of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, through the project "Scaling-Up Investment in Low-Carbon Public Buildings" (LowCarbon), financed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and implemented by UNDP in BiH in cooperation with other partners in the country.
Facade works and thermal insulation of external walls and the attic space were carried out, along with the replacement of parts of old joinery. Thanks to these energy efficiency measures, conditions in the premises improved, and the school now achieves significant financial savings. In addition, switching to gas heating solved the problem of unpleasant smoke from the coal burning, previously used to heat the school, due to which pupils and employee breathed polluted air.
"The comfort in the premises has been significantly increased and we are already achieving savings in the school budget. The school premises are heated, and the pupils, teachers and other staff can feel the positive change."School's Director, Amra Pajt
The school employees highlight the improved working conditions, with adequate temperatures in the rooms they use.
"The temperature and heating in the classrooms are better, which provides us with improved working conditions. Pupils can now do their assignments in a relaxed manner, dressed appropriately without the need to sit in fur coats during classes. These improved conditions have allowed us to elevate the quality of our work."Teacher, Merima Gačan
Further planned activities of the project include thermal insulation of the school's ceiling and roof, installation of new equipment in the boiler room, replacement of radiator valves and installation of LED bulbs.
The objective of the LowCarbon project is to remove financial barriers to increase investment in public facilities, which contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions, generates savings, creates new "green" jobs, and supports the economic development of the country.
