Stories
Stories on this page provide experiences, lessons, and results from activities to tackle challenges on cooling and chemicals and waste management from the prism of the development practitioners on the ground.
The UNDP Chemicals and Waste Hub is a network of partners that work alongside countries to support the transformation towards sound management of chemicals to underpin sustainable human development and support the shift to circular economy. The Hub also supports the development, testing and uptake of sustainable cooling solutions.
The challenges of transforming to circular economy and sound management of chemicals require addressing technical, financial, capacity, regulatory, and other barriers. This work requires a closer collaboration of partners with diverse set of capabilities and perspectives.
We work with governments and partners to improve management of chemicals and waste and achieve the goals of circular economy, to implement a whole-of-society approach to address plastic pollution along its entire value chain, and to develop integrated solutions to scale up the innovation and impact on sustainable cooling.
Chemicals and Waste Hub implements projects funded by GEF, MLF, and bilateral donors in 144 countries with a total value of 1.4 billion US dollars.
The Montreal Protocol is an international environmental agreement with universal ratification to protect the earth’s ozone layer by eliminating use of ozone depleting substances (ODS). It also support climate mitigation through the phase down of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). UNDP supports developing countries in their implementation of the Montreal Protocol trhrough technology transfer and technical assistance, formulation and implementation of country and sector strategies, capacity building, accessing funding from different sources, and facilitating public/private partnerships.
Chemicals are an essential part of modern society with positive impacts on employment, economic growth, health, environment, and the climate. However, if they are not managed properly, they can adversely affect human health and the environment. UNDP supports the efforts of developing countries towards sound management of chemicals and waste and to shift to a circular economy that eliminates waste and pollution.
We work with countries around the world to tackle plastic pollution along the value chain and protect human and planetary health.
UNDP helps countries access financial and technical resources and provides technical assistance and implementation support to improve the holistic management of chemicals and waste at national, regional, and global levels. UNDP supports the efforts to mitigate the global warming impact of cooling by enhancing clean energy access, transitioning to low global warning potential (GWP) refrigerants, increasing energy efficiency of cooling units, and developing and promoting integrated cooling and heating solutions coupled with renewable energy. Here you can learn about the results of UNDP-supported projects on chemicals, cooling, plastics, and waste management.
UNDP-supported global, regional, and country projects generate knowledge about innovative solutions on sustainable cooling and management of chemicals, plastics, and waste while safeguarding human health and environment.
