New York, 7 February 2018 – UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner announced today the appointment of Abdoulaye Mar Dieye as the Assistant Secretary-General to lead UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support starting March 1, 2018.
“Mar’s appointment to this position comes at a critical juncture for UNDP as we move to provide ever more strategic and tailored policy advice to developing countries, and to our partners, to support them in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Steiner. “Mar brings decades of experience in development policy to this position and a deep personal knowledge of UNDP that will serve the organization well as it evolves to meet the changing demands of a dynamic world.”
Previously, Mr. Dieye had served in various senior positions at UNDP, including as the Assistant Administrator and Director of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Africa and the Chief of Staff and Director of UNDP’s Executive Office. Prior to joining the UN System, Mr. Dieye worked with the Government of Senegal, as Chief of the General Planning Division (1976-1982) and Inspector General (1982-1984) in the Ministry of Planning and Cooperation.
Mr. Dieye, a Senegalese national, graduated from the École Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Administration Économique (ENSAE-CESD) of the Institut National de la Statistique et des Études Economiques (INSEE) in France. He also studied Advanced and Specialized Mathematics in France and holds a Masters in Development Studies, Economic Policy and Planning from the Institute of Social Studies in The Netherlands.
