Finscope Blended MSME Survey Findings Report for Eswatini 2023
February 27, 2025
The Eswatini Government continues to prioritise the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector as it recognises these businesses' critical role in fostering economic growth, generating employment, and lowering poverty. Therefore, a repeat Blended FinScope MSME survey was carried out in 2023 to understand and fully meet the information needs. The word "blended" was introduced to emphasise the inclusion of informal enterprises, a component of the nation's MSME population. The objective was to determine the size and diversity of MSMEs in Eswatini and the extent of formal and informal financial product and service access.
The findings show that over three-quarters of business owners in Eswatini rely on their MSME as their primary source of income. The dependency on business has dropped since 2017, possibly due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. However, there has been an 18% increase in MSMEs since 2017, with most operating in the wholesale and retail sectors, as well as agriculture and farming.
