United Nations Volunteers
The United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme is the UN organization that contributes to peace and development through volunteerism worldwide. Volunteerism is a powerful means of engaging people in tackling development challenges, and it can transform the pace and nature of development. Volunteerism benefits both society at large and the individual volunteer by strengthening trust, solidarity and reciprocity among citizens, and by purposefully creating opportunities for participation. The UNV Programme in Ethiopia was launched in the early 1970s. In line with the global pattern, the UNV programme is administered by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ethiopia. UNV contributes to peace and development by advocating for volunteerism, supporting integration of volunteerism into development planning and mobilizing volunteers to serve in various roles within UN agencies and other partners.
“As we seek to build capacities and to help the new agenda to take root, volunteerism can be another powerful and cross-cutting means of implementation. Volunteerism can help to expand and mobilize constituencies and to engage people in national planning and implementation for sustainable development goals. And volunteer groups can help to localize the new agenda by providing new areas of interaction between Governments and people for concrete and scalable actions.” - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
