Biodiversity Monitoring in Georgia’s Protected Areas: Guiding Documents
December 18, 2024
A set of publications highlights the development and implementation of biodiversity monitoring frameworks within Georgia’s Protected Areas. These resources address practices, challenges, and innovative solutions, integrating international standards to strengthen biodiversity conservation. Key outputs include a Biodiversity Monitoring Plan (2020–2029) and an updated concept and business model for a Biodiversity Monitoring Coordination Unit.
The publications also include the Field Guide to Forest Ecological Monitoring and monitoring protocols for five key indicators in the Management Effectiveness Assessment of the Colchic Forest Protected Areas. These indicators cover the condition of Colchic deciduous and mixed forests, sweet chestnut health and chestnut blight incidence, site occupancy of the Caucasian salamander, infringement records and signs, and patrolling capacity and intensity.
The reports were prepared by the Caucasus Nature Fund (CNF) in partnership with the Agency of Protected Areas of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia with assistance from UNDP and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This work is part of their joint project to enhance the financial sustainability of Georgia’s 12 protected areas.
