New skills training enhances water sector services in Iraq: Meet Mufeed from Diyala
April 18, 2023
“I did not expect that at the age of 55, I would receive training again in the water pump installation and maintenance field. Today, I can say that age is just a number and not an obstacle to learning new skills,”Mufeed Hameed Husain
Mufeed Hameed Husain works as the Deputy Technical Director of the Diyala Water Directorate and has emphasized how receiving theoretical training has enhanced the knowledge he has gained from practical experience in his field. Now, after his course on modern scientific methods for operating water pumps, Mufeed plans to train colleagues on installation and maintenance to pass on his expertise.
Mufeed adds, "While I acquired theoretical knowledge during my training, I also gained a new understanding of the daily work environment. I am sure we can increase the quality and quantity of water provided to citizens, especially after this training course."
Following operations to liberate Diyala from ISIL, Mufeed returned to the Diyala Water Directorate and was keen to resume his work. He explains, "After liberation, I felt very sad to see the damage to all areas in Diyala. But, I knew that we had to rebuild and increase development, not only for ourselves but for society as a whole.”
UNDP has rolled out capacity-building training for 340 participants from water sector directorates across Anbar, Diyala and Salah al-Din, thanks to generous support from the Government of Germany through the Funding Facility for Stabilization.
These training sessions serve to ensure the sustainability of UNDP’s interventions by equipping technical employees with the skills required to successfully operate and maintain rehabilitated equipment. In Diyala, through UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization, seven projects have been implemented to support reconstruction in the water sector. Through this capacity building, employees such as Mufeed are familiarized with modern installation and maintenance methods, supporting governorate service provision to flourish.
UNDP’s Funding Facility for Stabilization has three main objectives – to facilitate the return of displaced Iraqis, to lay the groundwork for reconstruction and recovery and to safeguard communities against the resurgence of violence and extremism.
