Aqaba, October 10, 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Jordan, in partnership with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), announced the launch of the "Catalyzing a Transformative Model for Circularity through 9R’s in Aqaba" project during a special ceremony held in Aqaba on 10 October 2024. This initiative, funded by the Delegation of the European Union to Jordan, will support the development of a green, environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive circular economy in Aqaba.

The project, which is worth EUR 2.8 million and will run for two and a half years, introduces the 9R’s systems solution framework to offset increasing pollution, waste, and the loss of biodiversity, a crucial step towards creating a circular economy in Aqaba.

During the launch ceremony, the Head of the Environment and Inclusive Growth Portfolio at UNDP Jordan, Dr Nedal Al Oran, emphasised the important role of the project in increasing the application of resource efficiency practices to extend the lifespan of products, which he said will be achieved through integrating optimum waste recovery measures across production and manufacturing cycles.

Speaking about the UNDP-ASEZA strong partnership, Dr Al Oran highlighted that the new 9R’s project reflects a shared commitment in enhancing Aqaba’s business resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability, in line with Jordan’s Economic Modernisation Vision.

A panel discussion encompassing representatives from the Ministry of Environment, Chamber of Commerce, Youth Initiatives, and the Hotels Association was also held during the launch ceremony. The panellists shared their valuable insights into the crucial role of mainstreaming sustainable practices to further support Aqaba's long-term sustainability and resilience. They also emphasized the importance of continuing to introduce robust regulations and exploring the potential for circularity across various areas, including the industrial, commercial, and tourism sectors.

The launch ceremony was attended by the Chief Commissioner of ASEZA, senior government officials, and representatives from the Delegation of the European Union to Jordan. Other stakeholders and partners from the private and public sector were also in attendance.
