Kosovo Graduation Ceremony for the 1st Cohort of GEG Beneficiaries
Global Engineer Girls
October 19, 2023
Your Excellency President Osmani
Dear Ms. Ozdemir
Honorable Minister Nagavci
Dear Ambassadors
Distinguished guests
And above all dear accomplished graduates
Today is a day of celebration and inspiration, as we gather to honor the remarkable achievements of these 20 outstanding young engineers who have completed the support programme of the Global Engineering Girls Project. This initiative, implemented through a partnership between Limak and the United Nations Development Programme, signifies a powerful commitment to empowering women in STEM fields and fostering a brighter future for all.
The journey that these young engineers have undertaken is not merely a reflection of their individual dedication and talent. The journey is a testament to the transformative power of collaborative partnerships between institutions, development partners, private sector, and academia.
In today's world, innovation and technological advancement are critical driving forces behind progress. Yet, for far too long, the doors of opportunity within these fields have been, unjustly, less accessible to women. This project, however, has aimed to challenge this situation, by providing a platform for these young women to not only explore but also excel in engineering and wider STEM fields.
As UNDP we started this journey when as part of our Western Balkan Regional Programme for Women’s Economic Empowerment, we initiated the Women in STEM Network in Kosovo, which has grown into a network of over 50 successful women with different profiles and from a variety of sectors. Some of the members are present here today and I thank them for it.
Worldwide, STEM fields are crucial to driving innovation and economic growth, especially in light of the transition to carbon-neutral economies, and there is increasing demand in the labor market for the skills and expertise of this sector. Future engagement in STEM inherently translates into better economic resilience.
We all want more women in STEM as a contributor to their empowerment. Their equal participation in this field will accelerate the development of STEM sectors which have some of the highest potential for Kosovo’s economy and sustainable development. The participation of women in STEM also accelerates the accomplishment of SDGs.
We are very happy that Global Engineer Girls, was started by Limak as an international philanthropic initiative in 2015. I am happy that we were able to partner and bring this project to Kosovo, but I am also happy that we have collaborated with the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, as well as with academia in this journey. Thank you all for your trust.
Our joint efforts illustrate that real change is possible when different actors combine their strengths, resources, and expertise to address pressing global challenges.
The Global Engineering Girls Project has not only equipped young women with the skills necessary to succeed in their access to the labor market and the economy but has also provided internship and mentorship opportunities that instilled within them the confidence and determination to excel in their careers and to break down the gender barriers that have, for far too long, hindered progress in STEM.
The graduates before us today are the embodiment of that change. They are the living proof that gender should never be an obstacle to the pursuit of knowledge, innovation, and excellence. Their achievements have already begun to reshape the narrative surrounding women in STEM, inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.
As we celebrate their accomplishments, let us also recognize the potential and promise they represent. The empowerment of women in STEM is not just about achieving gender parity, it is about driving innovation, solving complex global challenges, and ensuring a better future for all. We need the diverse perspectives, talents, and passions of all individuals, regardless of their gender, to overcome the challenges of our time.
To our graduates, remember that you are part of a powerful movement towards a more inclusive and equitable world. You have a responsibility to use your newfound knowledge and skills to continue breaking down barriers and leading by example. Your journey doesn't end here. Your journey is only just beginning.
In closing, let me express our gratitude to Limak and all other partners here today, to the families and friends who have supported these graduates throughout their journey, and, most importantly, to these 20 incredible young engineers who have proven that with dedication, collaboration, and determination, the future is boundless.
Congratulations to you all, you are the engineers of tomorrow, and Kosovo eagerly awaits your contributions.
Thank you.
