Towards a Sustainable Future: Kyrgyzstan Revises Its Biodiversity Conservation Strategy

Bishkek, December 10–11, 2024 – Kyrgyzstan continues its dedicated efforts to preserve its unique natural heritage. At the second national workshop on revising the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), government representatives, experts, and stakeholders collaborated to identify priorities, goals, and concrete measures to align the national strategy with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), marked a significant milestone in developing the updated strategy.

Kumar Mambetaliev, Head of the Biodiversity Resources Department at the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic, emphasized: "This workshop highlights the importance of uniting various stakeholders to create a cohesive and effective strategy."

Lira Zholdubaeva, Head of the Climate Change, Ecology, and Biodiversity Cluster at UNDP in Kyrgyzstan, noted: "This document will serve as a roadmap for sustainable natural resource management and biodiversity conservation in Kyrgyzstan through 2030. Together, we are working to align our national strategy with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for our country."

During the workshop, participants adapted key objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework to Kyrgyzstan's context. These objectives include reducing pollution levels, developing measures to mitigate the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, and promoting sustainable agriculture. Using the BIOFIN methodology, participants proposed financing mechanisms to attract additional resources for biodiversity conservation.

The outcomes of the workshop will serve as the foundation for the updated NBSAP, enabling Kyrgyzstan to strengthen its position in fulfilling international commitments while tailoring the national strategy to local realities.
