The Digital Neighborhood experiment

Project Owner: UNDP Bolivia

The Digital Neighborhood experiment, spearheaded by the innovative Accelerator Lab, was a visionary initiative aimed at addressing the persistent digital divides within the Municipality of La Paz. It took a profoundly community-centric approach, engaging citizens from representative neighborhoods in a collaborative effort to co-create impactful solutions. Through this approach, the project achieved more than just technological advancement; it empowered residents, transforming them into pivotal actors in the trajectory of their own communities.

This paradigm shift in development strategies had a profound impact on La Paz. By involving the residents intimately in decision-making processes and solution design, the experiment fostered a sense of ownership and agency among the people. They became not mere recipients of services but active contributors to the growth and betterment of their neighborhoods. This newfound sense of responsibility catalyzed social innovation, spurring creative and context-specific solutions to the challenges these communities faced.

The tangible outcome of these collaborative efforts is the remarkable Mi Barrio platform. This platform serves as both a testament to the significance of citizen participation and a powerful tool for evidence-based policymaking. Traditionally, vital information generated by residents often eludes the grasp of existing channels. Mi Barrio, however, bridges this gap, providing a dedicated space for citizens to voice their concerns, ideas, and aspirations. It captures the wealth of knowledge and insights residing within the community, transforming it into valuable data that can inform and shape public policy.

Furthermore, Mi Barrio aligns itself with the pioneering adoption of a localization strategy for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the Municipality of La Paz. This strategy emphasizes the importance of tailoring global development goals to the unique needs and circumstances of local communities. By putting citizen participation at its core, Mi Barrio exemplifies this localization approach. It takes concrete steps towards making the SDGs a reality at the grassroots level, ensuring that La Paz evolves into an inclusive municipality with effective governance mechanisms.

In summary, the Digital Neighborhood experiment and the subsequent creation of Mi Barrio represent a bold and transformative journey towards inclusive development. By engaging citizens, fostering social innovation, and embracing localization for the SDGs, the Municipality of La Paz has set a precedent for effective, citizen-centric governance that inspires and empowers communities around the world.
