Methodology for the digital

delimitation of river, stream, and creek protection areas.

PROJECT OWNER: CO – Costa Rica

River, stream, and creek protection areas are key for the proper functioning of the hydrographic regimes of these bodies of water, and their management is contemplated in Costa Rican environmental regulations.

In addition, these protection areas serve as necessary retreat spaces for disaster prevention in the face of possible floods and changes in the course, resulting from both natural dynamics and anthropic interventions that may accelerate sedimentation and erosion processes. The "Methodology for the digital delimitation of river, stream, and creek protection areas" allows, for the first time in the country, the establishment of complete alignments under a standardized method, by micro-watershed, sub-watershed, and watershed. This facilitates inter-institutional and inter-municipal coordination, enabling more impactful decision-making and action execution. It also provides more information for planning and managing citizen participation in the protection of surface water resources and their associated ecosystems.
