Information Management for Citizen Security in Central America (InfoSegura)

PROJECT OWNER: InfoSegura-UNDP Regional Hub Panama

The project Evidence-Based Information Management for Citizen Security in Central America (InfoSegura), in partnership with USAID, aims to strengthen evidence-based policy making by improving the quality and comparability of regional citizen security statistics and information, and increasing regional coordination and collaboration on effective citizen security strategies in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, Costa Rica y the Dominican Republic. InfoSegura seeks to improve the quality of citizen security and violence prevention information in Central America and the Dominican Republic and provide periodic and trustworthy data for decision makers and for the production of evidence-based public policies.

InfoSegura has achieved two main outcomes: 1) Strengthen evidence-based policy making; 2) Improve the analysis on which citizen security policy decisions are based. These two outcomes have been reached through: (1) improving regional and national institutional capacity to collect, monitor, and process information and apply it to decision-making and policy formulation at both levels;

(2) building civil society capacity to collect, analyze, and process citizen security data and monitor citizen security policies and programs; and (3) supporting regional knowledge exchange and dialogue to enhance the understanding of root causes of violence and insecurity and promote successful citizen security policies and practices.

InfoSegura has been supporting the digital transformation of the region for the past 10 years, through its strategy of promoting the use of technology and digitization that includes the construction of data ecosystems, the development of tools for automated analysis (territorial prioritization tools, AI-based chatbots) and national and regional digital web-based information platforms, among others. InfoSegura also generates reports, news updates, newsletters, blogs, infographics on the citizen security context both at the national and regional level and shares its products via a digital communication strategy, which includes a webpage repository, intensive use of social networks and other digital instruments like virtual webinars.
