Using Arts to Support Social Stability in Chyah
In Chyah, Beirut, local actors joined the Mechanisms for Social Stability process and worked together on making the area a better place for everyone with the support of UNDP Lebanon and the funds of UKDFID.
After a series of workshops and trainings, the already existing committee of local actors and municipal members of Chyah developed a code of conduct for peacebuilding and planned to organize multiple activities based on its values.
As a start, the MSS committee organized a training for youth about the “other” earlier last year. Later in April, the committee continued its activities by launching a food market on what used to be a demarcation line. The market featured a common space and play area for the Lebanese and Syrian residents of all ages to spend the day together over street food, interacting and celebrating the day.
More recently, the committee invited graffiti artists and painters on June 30, 2019, to come from all over the Lebanese regions to portray diversity as a source of inspiration and make art in the name of peace. The event was widely attended by more than 60 painters and graffiti artists who contributed to a large graffiti painting portraying peace messages from the participants of the event.
