July 13, 2023

The Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources, and Agriculture has concluded the Good Agricultural Practices (M-GAP) Auditor's Training, which was supported by UNDP and the Government of Japan. Fifty-four participants (27 men and 27 women) from 16 councils, health centers, Agro National Corporation Ltd (AgroNat), the Maldives Food and Drug Authority, and the Agriculture Department of the Ministry were certified to promote sustainable agricultural practices.

During the 4-day training, participants gained comprehensive instruction and hands-on experience in M-GAP farm audits. As qualified trainers, they can ensure the consistent auditing of agricultural practices and train more auditors in responsible farming methods to improve food safety.

“Our hope is that through our partnership and this training, we will be able to positively influence farming practices in the Maldives," Vera Hakim, UNDP Maldives' Deputy Resident Representative, said at the closing ceremony. She noted that embracing good agricultural practices enhances food production and fosters self-sufficiency and food security.
