7,300 people from both banks of the Nistru river benefited from support through the joint UN project for peace and social cohesion

On 19 February 2025, UN Moldova concluded the joint project “Building sustainable and inclusive peace, strengthening trust and social cohesion on both banks of Nistru river” implemented by UN Human Rights, UNDP, and UN Women and financed by the UN Peacebuilding Fund. The occasion brought together over 90 participants from both banks of Nistru river, including development partners and civil society representatives.
Over the two-and-a-half years of implementation, the joint project contributed to nurturing a culture of dialogue, strengthening trust, and social cohesion between communities, directly impacting 7,300 people, 60% of whom were women and girls. More than 85 activities were organized to promote peace and social cohesion, many of them community-driven and bridging the two banks together.
The project facilitated the creation of cross-river networks of civil society organizations and youth peacebuilders and produced a variety of tools and knowledge products to be used in future peacebuilding efforts. Additionally, a network of paralegals on the left bank of the Nistru river was established to facilitate access to services available on the right bank. This network has already provided primary legal assistance to over 1,500 people, facilitating their access to healthcare, education, and social services. Exchanges and dialogue between the People’s Advocate of Moldova and the focal point for human rights in the left bank were fostered to enhance skills for human rights monitoring.
The project increased capacities of journalists and influencers in promoting information integrity, tackling disinformation, and enabled conflict- and gender-sensitive reporting. It also raised awareness and empowered key stakeholders to counter hate speech and divisive narratives, contributing to conflict prevention.
"Strengthening social cohesion in Moldova requires sustained investment and deeper engagement. The United Nations in Moldova will continue fostering inclusive dialogue at the community level and ensuring that no one and nowhere is left behind,” said Yesim Oruc, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova.
Through innovative approaches, in cooperation with young people and creative industries, the project inspired the development of several digital solutions to connect communities and address mutual challenges.
At the same time, the project placed a strong emphasis on promoting women’s leadership by implementing the Women, Peace, and Security agenda, ensuring a gender-sensitive approach at all stages of intervention.
The closing event provided participants with an opportunity to reflect on the results achieved and discuss prospects for continuing initiatives aimed at strengthening peace and trust on both banks of Nistru river.
