Agi Veres, Deputy Director for Europe and the CIS of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is visiting the Republic of Moldova on 20-21 February 2020. Throughout her two-day visit, Agi Veres will meet with representatives of the Government, civil society, international organizations and the United Nations to discuss Moldova’s progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and reiterate UNDP’s continued support in the key areas of national development.
On 20 February, Ms. Veres will join Moldova’s Prime Minister at the national launch of the 2019 Human Development Report “Beyond income, beyond averages, beyond today: Inequalities in human development in the 21st century,” UNDP’s flagship publication that captures development trends in 189 world countries, including Moldova. The presentation of the outcomes of the Human Development Report will be followed by a moderated debate around inequalities, with the Minister of Health, Labour and Social Protection and renowned speakers from the international development community and civil society.
On 21 February, Ms. Veres will travel to the town of Rezina where UNDP, in partnership with the European Union (EU), is contributing to increasing confidence between both banks of Nistru river. Rezina and Ribnita, two towns on the opposite banks of the Nistru River, have close economic, social and human ties. People living in Ribnita receive social services in Rezina and the residents of both towns tend to travel a lot between the locations for work and family reasons. Half of the medical personnel employed at Rezina Hospital is from Ribnita.
The EU and UNDP confidence-building measures focus on promoting social infrastructure and strengthening people-to-people connections. As part of this support, the Contagious Disease Ward and Surgery Department were renovated at Rezina Hospital, the chess schools in both towns were repaired and received technical assistance, and public lighting was installed across a connecting bridge for the first time since 1993.
UNDP Deputy Director for Europe and the CIS Agi Veres will finalise her official visit to the Republic of Moldova on 21 February.
