UNDP Moldova's team planted about 150 kilograms of acorns in Puhoi village, Ialoveni district. The reforestation area is about 0.6 hectares. The action is part of the annual national campaign to expand the green areas of the Republic of Moldova, which will last one month.
UNDP's team planted acorns into an adjacent land to the oak forest in the region. According to the national agency Moldsilva representatives, the plantation's rejuvenating is essential and beneficial for the environment and for the people who live nearby.
Overall, in the framework of the national campaign for expanding the green areas, more than 5.5 million seedlings will be planted. Authorities plan to regenerate almost 580 hectares of forest and to complete several thousand hectares of recent plantations. Currently, the afforestation rate of the Republic of Moldova is about 11%.
"UNDP Moldova and its team support the initiative to increase the rate of afforestation to 16% of the total country’s territory by 2030. We gladly accepted to be part of this campaign. It is vital to stand together for the fight against climate changes. It is a small effort, but it will bring rich big results," mentioned Liuba Brinzoi, Project Associate at UNDP Moldova.
About 30 UNDP's employees and members of their families participated in the planting activity. The national agency Moldsilva provided the needed acorns.
According to thematic studies, at least 25& of the territory of the Republic of Moldova must be covered with forests. This is essential for a balanced living environment with better air and soil quality, sufficient water, and healthy biodiversity.
At the UN Conference on Climate Change in 2021, in Glasgow, UK, the global leaders pledged to stop deforestation and land degradation. The Republic of Moldova signed the commitment.
