Mongolia to strengthen forest firefighting capacity with support from CIDCA and UNDP

Ulaanbaatar, 2 February 2024 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Mongolia and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia signed on the implementation of “Strengthening forest firefighting capacity towards green recovery in Mongolia” project, funded by the Government of People’s Republic of China through the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund of China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).

The Project will be co-implemented over the course of 2024 by the National Forest Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and UNDP in Mongolia. It aims to strengthen wildfire forecasting and reporting system and fire suppression management while improving the capacity of local fire suppression units and first responders, particularly, in the boreal forest region. 

Mongolia's boreal forests, covering over 12 million hectares, are integral to its ecosystem and the livelihoods of its people and biodiversity. There also have been increase in forest fires in recent years, exacerbated by climate change and human activities, posing a threat to biodiversity and local communities highlighting the need and urgency for enhancing firefighting capacity.

His Excellency Bat-Erdene Bat-Ulzii, Minister of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia, highlighted the significance of the project and stated, " The Mongolian Government has included goals on protection and rehabilitation forest resources into our long-and medium-term development policies. This initiative will contribute to our holistic approach to combating climate change and desertification. It also underscores our commitment to ensuring a sustainable and green future for future generations."

H.E. Shen Minjuan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of People’s Republic of China to Mongolia

Her Excellency Shen Minjuan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of People’s Republic of China to Mongolia, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, "This project is designed to support Mongolia's forest conservation efforts and promote sustainable development. The People’s Republic of China will increase our participation in multilateral development projects similar to this project through Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund to build a community of shared future for global development." Ambassador Shen also mentioned that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China-Mongolia ties. People’s Republic of China looks forward to promoting the Belt and Road cooperation and Global Development Initiative cooperation with the Mongolian side.

The project aligns with Mongolia's national development goals, including Vision 2050 and the New Revival policy, fostering green growth and advancements in the forestry sector. It represents a pivotal step in enhancing Mongolia’s environmental stewardship, while also reinforcing regional cooperation and sustainable development.
