Ulaanbaatar, 5 March 2024 – “The Support Programme on Scaling up Climate Ambition on Land Use and Agriculture (SCALA)”, the joint programme of UNDP and FAO funded by the Government of Germany, organized the “Integrating gender equality into the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of Mongolia” training workshop. The workshop aimed to improve coordination among various stakeholders and build institutional capacity for integrating and updating gender responsive NDCs in Mongolia's agriculture and land use sectors.

Since 2021, the SCALA Programme has been supporting Mongolia in enhancing climate action in these sectors, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing resilience and adaptability to climate change, while adopting an inclusive approach in implementing national climate strategies.

Today’s workshop focused on the intricate connection between gender equality and climate change, highlighting the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women and girls. The participants explored pathways to further gender equality and social inclusion in climate action and developed a shared vision to incorporate gender considerations into Mongolia's NDCs.

In his opening remarks, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry Mr. Jambaltseren Tumur-Uya stated, “Integrating gender equality into climate initiatives is particularly critical in rural areas of Mongolia, where the dependency on ecosystems is high, and pastoral and agricultural activities are prevalent. Acknowledging and empowering women is key to driving more effective and enduring climate solutions in these essential sectors.”

Mongolia is committed to addressing climate change as outlined in its NDCs, with mitigation targets aiming for a 22.7 percent reduction in total national greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The country is also enhancing the status of women and girls in rural regions, as evidenced by its leadership in adopting a UN resolution during the 78th UN General Assembly session.
