Ashgabat, 11 December 2021: Today, on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan, Government of Turkmenistan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed a number of strategic documents on expanding cooperation in the areas of climate change and energy, health and democratic governance.
More specifically, UNDP launched the following new joint project and made an amendment to an ongoing project in support of the environment and climate agenda and strengthening the health system of the country:
"Developing a National Adaptation Planning Process in Turkmenistan", funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented jointly with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan;
Amendment to the project “Exit of the National Tuberculosis Programme of Turkmenistan from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) support by 2024”, implemented jointly with the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan.
Furthermore, the Government of Turkmenistan and UNDP signed an extension of the ongoing programme activities, to ensure smooth completion and achievement of the results set forth in the new Cooperation programme for 2021-2025, namely:
Annual Work Plan for 2022-2024 between the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan and the UNDP in the framework of the Regional project "Creation of the SDGs Platform for Central Asia", funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP;
Annual Work Plan for 2022 between the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection of Turkmenistan and the UNDP/GEF "Sustainable Cities in Turkmenistan: Integrated Green Urban Development in Ashgabat and Avaza”;
Annual Work Plan for 2022 between the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection of Turkmenistan and the UNDP/GEF "Supporting climate resilient livelihoods in agricultural communities in drought-prone areas of Turkmenistan".
“Together with the Government and other development partners, we will continue to support the country in addressing the complex development agenda across a broad spectrum of issues related to democratic governance, the environment and energy, and human development. In all these areas, we help strengthen national capacity and introduce innovative solutions to promote the national development agenda,” – noted Narine Sahakyan, UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan.
