The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Sudanese Organization for Research and Development (SORD) signed on December 12 an agreement under which UNDP will contribute $250,000 to promote the participation of Sudanese women in the Transitional Legislative Council.
In line with the agreed 40% quota of women representation in the Transitional Legislative Council, stated in the constitutional document, UNDP takes on a multidimensional approach to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment as essential aspects to the transitional period in Sudan.
Moreover, UNDP works with national partners on the ground on advancing gender equality, which includes eliminating all forms of violence against women, promoting women’s participation in decision-making and recognizing the value of women’s unpaid work.
All around the world, UNDP supports national partners to develop and implement legal and policy reforms to ensure women’s participation in decision-making and implement initiatives to develop women’s capacities to participate and lead, such as promoting women’s participation as voters and candidates in electoral processes and supporting women’s representation in governance institutions.
Chapter 7 of the Constitutional Document of the Transitional Period 2019, on the Transitional Legislative Council, states on point (2), The participation of women is not being less than 40%.
