The acting Resident Representative (RR) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ghana, Ms. Gita Honwana Welch paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.
Ms. Welch briefed the Minister on the role of UNDP within the context of the current UN reforms, and specifically in relation to the de-linking of the functions and offices of the UNDP Resident Representative from that of UN Resident Coordinator (RC), effective 1st December 2018.
She noted that, the de-linking represents an opportunity for UNDP, which as an independent entity, will be in a better position to play an integrator role and contribute significantly to supporting the UN Development System’s (UNDS) efforts in Ghana.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, on her part, emphasized the Government’s focus on planning its activities around the SDGs, particularly because of the role of the President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a Co-Chair of the Eminent Group of SDGs Advocates, formed by the UN Secretary General.
The Minister reiterated that her Office will be happy to assist with any matter during this transition, as necessary.
