Malaysia: The UNGPs And ESG Investment Policies in Government-linked Investment Companies

September 8, 2021

This Issue Brief discusses the role of Malaysia’s Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs) to protect and respect human rights through environmental, social and corporate governance policies and practices. This Brief provides insights into how GLICs can leverage their authority to influence business to embrace the UN Guiding Principles of Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) and consider human rights risks when exercising decision-making power. Key recommendations are also provided to ensure rights-based investment practices are undertaken in greater measure, contributing to Malaysia’s ambitions as a low-risk and high-return investment destination in Asia.
