About UNDP in Sudan

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has been operational in Sudan since 1965, supporting millions of people in need, including local communities, internally displaced persons, refugees, returnees, migrants, women, and youth.

When conflict broke out in April 2023, UNDP pivoted its existing programming to respond to the crisis. UNDP Sudan's new Crisis Offer aims to address emerging multi-sectoral recovery needs to pave a path through and beyond this current crisis. When conditions allow, UNDP will resume programming that had to be paused.

Our pre-April 2023 programming:

Guided by the vision of Sudan’s transition and ongoing peace efforts, and with dedicated assistance from the international community and national partners, UNDP’s work has focused on supporting those left behind in key areas of development. This is done in alignment with the rest of the UN and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Prior to April 2023, our specific portfolios of work are:

Our specific portfolios of work are:

Operating under the framework of the UNDAF and led by our Senior Management Team, with more than 250 staff across 18 state offices, UNDP Sudan mobilized significant resources each year in support of national developmental objectives, via programmes implemented across Sudan’s 18 states.

In 2020, UNDP Sudan delivered more than USD 97 million of programmatic support across its five portfolios. Reflecting the increased needs across Sudan, UNDP is currently expanding our programmatic operations nationwide, and our state- and community-level presence, with an estimated 2021 spending in excess of USD 100 million.

Our work is intersected by cross-cutting topics, including crisis and emergency response, youth, gender, innovation (via our Accelerator Lab), private sector partnerships, and development/aid-sector coordination, each with dedicated  programmes.

The work of UNDP in Sudan would not be possible without the support of a full spectrum of partners, including the Governments and the affiliated aid/development agencies of Sweden, Switzerland, Norway, Italy, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, and others. This is complemented by UNDP Core Funding from generous donor nations, and support from multiple international entities – including the Global Fund, Global Environment Facility and Green Climate Fund – and from direct UN sources like the Secretary-General's Peacebuilding Fund.

These partners, along with new and emerging donors and international financial institutions, help mobilize the knowledge and resources required to support our ambitious agenda.

UNDP also assists with the administration, coordination or management of several funds or entities in Sudan, including:

Across our work, UNDP utilizes a Whole-of-Government and Whole-of-Society approach, in unison with the new United Nations Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), the departing United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), sister UN agencies, the private sector, the “Friends of Sudan” group, and national and international entities.

Through these collaborative efforts and our own, UNDP works towards achieving the goals of Sudan’s people and its Transitional Government, through investment at all levels of society.
