UNDP’s Executive Board approves 2023-2027 Country Programme for Moldova
September 5, 2022
On 1 September 2022, UNDP’s Executive Board approved the 2023-2027 Country Programme for Moldova.
The 5-years programme looks at assisting the country in four main areas, supporting a vision for a more cohesive, inclusive, just and resilient society, and a better quality of life for everyone:
- Just and inclusive institutions and equal opportunities for human development – institutions deliver human rights, evidence-based and gender-responsive services for all, including the most vulnerable people in Moldova;
- Participatory governance and social cohesion – more accountable, transparent, human rights-based, and gender-responsive governance empowers all people in Moldova to participate in and to contribute to all spheres of life;
- Enhanced shared prosperity in a sustainable economy – all people in Moldova benefit from inclusive, competitive and sustainable economic development and equitable/equal access to decent work and productive employment;
- Green development, sustainable communities, and disaster and climate resilience – all people in Moldova and institutions benefit from and contribute to green and resilient development, sustainable use of natural resources and effective climate change and disaster risk management.
Achieving a better quality of life for all people, as envisioned in the Moldova 2030 Strategy, is only possible if the country’s prosperity is shared by all and the most vulnerable and marginalized are empowered to exercise their human rights and participate meaningfully in all fields of life. Enhanced inclusion and resilience, peace and security are important preconditions, allowing all people to contribute to the country’s social and economic transformation and to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.
“We appreciate the contribution of UNDP new country programme to the sustainable development of Moldova by envisaging the much-needed support in key areas such as justice, renewable energy, green economy, and digitalization. The partnership with UNDP and its continuous support are essential in overcoming the crises affecting the Republic of Moldova and in ensuring a better quality of life for people,” said Gheorghe Leucă, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Moldova to the UN.
“UNDP is well positioned to continue its support to the Government, having specific comparative advantages that include its neutrality, expertise, swift integrated response, presence on the ground, solid and innovative partnerships, effectiveness as well as the capacity to convene and mobilize support of all actors around the Sustainable Development Goals and their advancement in Moldova,” noted Dima Al-Khatib, UNDP Resident Representative to the Republic of Moldova.
During 2023-2027, UNDP will continue to assist Moldova in managing the multidimensional shocks caused by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis and in enhancing its economic, social and environmental resilience.
The new UNDP Country Programme Document benefited from extensive consultations with government, civil society, academia, private sector, development partners and government. Informed by the UNDP global strategic plan for 2022-2025, the document is also deeply rooted in the new UN Cooperation Framework and guided by the priorities of the National Development Strategy Moldova 2030, those of the Association Agreement with the European Union and other relevant international commitments of the country.
UNDP is present in Moldova since 1992, covering two-thirds of the communities, including in the Gagauzian and Transnistrian regions.
