At their 28^th Meeting, the Parties to the Montreal Protocol adopted the Kigali Amendment to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). HFCs are used as refrigerants in many cooling appliances and have a very high global warming. Thus, their phase down will make a major contribution towards the fight against climate change. Control of HFC production and consumption will add to the climate benefits already achieved by the Montreal Protocol through the phase-out of ozone depleting substances (ODS) including CFCs and HCFCs. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal protocol will reduce the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) by more than 80 per cent over the next 30 years. If fully implemented, the amendment can avoid up to 0.4°C of global warming by the end of this century. The Kigali Amendment came into effect on 1^st January 2019.

UNDP is supporting 28 countries to develop strategies and plans to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) to implement the Kigali Amendment.
