For over 500 years, coffee has played a significant role in Yemeni culture and everyday life.
Yemenis transformed the wild coffee trees to a drinkable product and first exported the coffee beans through the Port of Mokha. It is because of the Yemeni farmers that around 2 billion cups of coffee being consumed every day in the world with yearly sales of USD 70 billion.
From the ancient coffee growing regions that stretch from the far north to the southern coast of the Red Sea, Yemeni coffee brings world class quality to every cup. Known for its rich and aromatic flavours, the story starts with the traditional farmers working high in the mountains, tilling the soil, raising the trees from saplings to a vision of vibrant green and red.
But, coffee means more than just a delicious energy boost. For many Yemenis still facing a life altered by the tragedy of the ongoing conflict, coffee is a pathway to sustainable income and a way for Yemeni families to access critical basic services to survive.
So on International Coffee Day, we celebrate the history of coffee in Yemen, the rich flavour and the fight to ensure Yemeni coffee farmers are continued to be empowered to grow and prosper with their yield, and that we can all enjoy this cup of Yemeni history for years to come.
