Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters, in collaboration with Technical Committee on Education
Prevalence, Correlates & Prevention of Conventional Bullying in Schools & Cyberbullying
Objectives
The objective of the Action, as described by the Technical Committee, is to:
Establish an island-wide epidemiology of bullying and cyberbullying in Cyprus, which is crucial in designing actions on a need-based approach for each community;
Compare the prevalence and the characteristics of bullying in the two communities;
Train teachers from both communities on bullying and good practices in handling and prevention of bullying.
Results
The Technical Committee on Education and Technical Committee on Crime and Criminal Matters have adopted an intercommunal solution to address one of the common concerns of both communities – bullying and cyberbullying in Cyprus. A common survey was created and approved by the relative authorities/bodies.
With the action continuing in the next phase of the project, it is expected that an increase in knowledge on prevalence of bullying, victimization, cyberbullying and cyber victimization among Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot primary and secondary school pupils will occur. Moreover, it is expected to identify both the major risks and protective factors of bullying, victimization, cyberbullying, cyber victimization as well as collect systematic data on stereotypes, prejudice, trust, school climate, in-group norms, and intergroup contact. By identifying such data and relating them to respondents’ characteristics, it will help the researchers to map out the extent and nature of the phenomenon as well as provide useful knowledge to be utilized in the training of teachers.
